Greenhouses FAQs
How can I build a mini greenhouse?
A mini greenhouse can be built out of a wide variety of materials from
wood, metal and glass to simply plastic and PVC pipes. The first step
is to decide how big the structure will be and this can range from a
cold frame that is roughly knee height to more permanent structures
that will last for years. Larger greenhouses require a foundation and
managed drainage as well as a larger ventilation system so take these
factors into mind while deciding on size.
The easiest and cheapest greenhouse to build can be constructed of
PVC pipe and clear plastic sheeting. These can be large enough to walk
into and grow plenty of plants but are not very permanent. They are
suitable for overwintering plants but will not last for much longer
than that. They might not look pretty either but they serve their purpose
very well.
Once you have chosen a size including the height as well as the length
and width make a plan. PVC can then be purchased along with connectors
and plastic sheeting. The thicker the sheeting the longer it will last
and the most weather resistant it will be. PVC can be easily cut with
a hand saw and the pieces can either be glued into their joints or screwed
in. After the frame is ready attach the plastic sheeting and insert
plants. Tend and enjoy.
What is a cold frame?
A cold frame is a very miniature greenhouse that is used early in the
spring or late in the fall to either get an early start on the season
or extend it. They are about the size of a large box but can be made
in many different sizes. They are not large enough to enter and are
set right onto the dirt. They can have a hinged lid to tend the plants
or the clear material can simply be removed. Wood and plastic are the
most common building materials and they are very simple to assemble.
Can I use a greenhouse year round?
For most greenhouses, even mini greenhouses, can be used all year long
although this greatly depends on how well the structure was built originally
and the materials used. A simple PVC greenhouse covered in plastic won’t
last much longer than one year and they are typically only used for
overwintering before being taken down. The longest lasting greenhouses
are made from a combination of metal and glass which quickly drives
up the cost of the structure.
